In response to a legislative proposal being negotiated between Rep. Kurt Daudt and Gov. Tim Walz, Rep. Steve Drazkowski expressed his disagreement with a plan for a bonding bill in exchange for renegotiating the emergency power of the governor.
Drazkowski said Daudt's proposal pretends to end the peacetime emergency while actually maintaining it. The proposal creates a "COVID-19 Public Health Response" that commands power and processes like the current ones.
"It would write the governor’s unconstitutional behaviors into law," Drazkowski said in a release.
Drazkowski said the proposal completely undermines the lawsuit he has been leading, with a bicameral group of legislators and business owners, to limit the governor's peacetime emergency powers.
"We are at a crucial point in our state’s history," Drazkowski said. "It is strange that anyone, let alone a legislative leader, would negotiate a proposal to cede power permanently to the executive branch for what appears to be little to no reduction in the governor’s excessive powers. We need a win for liberty and we need it now.”
