A recommended 2021 operating budget of over $3 million was passed for the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department by the Coordinating Committee on July 8 and approved by Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood and Tonka Bay.

This budget would be a 4.6% increase from 2020's budget, Sun Sailor reported. The increases come from four areas, Chief of Police Mike Meehan said.

He said the department now has 16 full-time officers instead of 15, which accounts for the first component.

The second is the 3% increase in wages. This amount is only an estimate and still needs to go through the labor negotiation process, Sun Sailor reported.

Worker's compensation insurance has also increased for law enforcement, which is the third area. It also increased for the department, which is the fourth component.

A funding formula was used to determine how much each of the for cities would contribute. Excelsior will contribute 26.9%; Shorewood will contribute approximately 50%; Tonka Bay will contribute 15.9%; Greenwood will contribute 7.7%, Sun Sailor reported.
