City Of Hopkins recently issued the following announcement.
Help keep our waters clean by raking up your leaves!
Wherever leaves fall, they decompose and restock the soil with nutrients and organic matter. But when there is no soil to land on — such as on a street or sidewalk — the leaves wash down the street and into the storm drain. From there they go directly into our creeks, lakes and rivers where they decompose and release phosphorous. This leads to unwanted algae growth, which can turn lakes green and negatively affect fish.
Have a storm drain near your home? Sign-up to Adopt-a-Drain! By adopting a storm drain, you are committing to keep it clear of leaves, trash and other debris. Visit https://mn.adopt-a-drain.org/map to sign-up.
