A new earned sick and safe leave ordinance affecting employees of Bloomington businesses begins July 1, 2023. Under the new ordinance:

  • Businesses with five or more employees must grant employees a minimum of one hour of paid sick and safe leave for every 30 hours they work, up to a maximum of 48 hours annually.
  • Employers with fewer than five employees must grant unpaid leave and can choose to provide paid leave.
  • Current employees will be able to use accrued time as soon as they have accrued it. New employees will be able to start using their accrued time 90 days after they begin employment. For example, employees hired July 1 can use accrued time beginning October 1, 2023.
For more information about the ordinance, developed through a taskforce of Bloomington businesses, unions and policy directors, visit blm.mn/essl.
