Hennepin County sheriff David Hutchinson has a warning for those who took part in rioting and looting two weeks ago.
"The violence must stop now,’’ Hutchinson told CBS affiliate WCCO in Minneapolis.
The latest unrest on Aug. 27 followed a false rumor of police killing a black man at the Nicollet Mall. Authorities then released a video of the man shooting himself. The video was then taken off social media channels.
But the police were busy that night as it made 132 arrests and people were charged with riot, burglary, damage to property and violating curfew. It’s unknown how many of those arrested were booked into jail or released. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey then instituted a curfew and the National Guard was called in.
“My staff and I fully support the right to protest peacefully and assemble lawfully. Our deputies and staff will continue to do all we can to ensure demonstrators have a safe environment to voice their concerns. But violence and looting will simply not be tolerated. We will not sit back and let criminal activity occur without consequences. We will make lawful arrests to ensure the safety and security of the looting started at the Target store on Nicollet Mall and spread to businesses up and down the commercial corridor," Hutchinson told WCCO.
