Officer Gives Pup a New Home

Most days police officers strive to separate work and home. But when your work is as cute as this, how can you not want to take it home?

In August 2022, Minnetonka Police responded to an animal welfare check for a dog believed to be abandoned inside an apartment. Officers found a 6-month-old German shepherd, who was underweight, malnourished and in need of immediate veterinary care. Officers took the dog to a local animal hospital for treatment.

Hearing about the dog and its condition, Minnetonka Police Officer Luke Troyak’s interest was piqued. After speaking with his wife, he decided he would like to adopt the dog if the opportunity arose.

During a follow-up investigation, the department located the dog owner, who agreed to relinquish ownership.

“We named her Kaia and have loved every minute with her,” Troyak said.

Kaia was still grossly underweight when adopted. She has thankfully put on weight and is now healthy and doing well. While she still struggles with some trauma from her experience, Troyak said “[Kaia] is currently loving her home with us.”
